Ciner Resources has naturally mined trona from the Green River Basin in Wyoming since 1962. Every year, over 3.25 million tons of all-natural soda ash is extracted and transported by Ciner Resources from the Green River Basin to around the world.
Approximately 850 feet below the earth, we naturally excavate trona using the Room and Pillar Method and transport it to the surface on a series of conveyor belts where it is transformed into soda ash in our aboveground facility. The trona to soda ash transformation is achieved with our evaporative crystallizer technology. Essentially, this innovative technology adds and removes water, filtering out impurities to enhance the quality of the product.
During the evaporative crystallizer process, the soda ash and water mixture is contained in holding ponds throughout our facility until the water naturally evaporates. The resulting slurry is placed into a centrifuge that separates the remaining water from the recently formed soda ash crystals. This crystallization only begins when the slurry reaches equilibrium with the solution. These crystals are then separated, dried, and placed in storage, ready for transport all around the world.
Evaporative crystallizer technology allows Ciner to produce pure, high-quality soda ash with minimal expense, keeping our prices competitive. It also allows us to recycle, refine, and reuse soda ash throughout the purification process. To further avoid waste and pollution, we developed a unique solution to reduce the capacity of these ponds and recover the reusable soda ash. When the soda ash in these ponds crystalize, we harvest and introduce them as additional feedstock to complement our trona mining efforts. In addition, our all-natural mining approach keeps costs low, allowing us to distribute Ciner soda ash all over the world in a cost-effective and competitive manner.
